What Does an Oncologist do?

Oncology is the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Medical professionals who work within this sector are referred to as oncologists but, as with many medical fields, this title is split between speciality speciality roles:

Medical oncologist

A medical oncologist deals with the treatment of cancer via chemotherapy and alternative medical routes should chemotherapy not be a feasible option.

Surgical oncologist

Surgical oncologists deal with any operations required for a cancer patient, including the removal of tumours and any cancerous tissue.

Gynaecologic oncologist

These oncologists treat cancers classed as gynaecologic such as uterine, cervical and ovarian.

Paediatric oncologist

Paediatric oncologists treat cancer in children and teenagers. There are many forms of cancer more prominent in young people including Leukaemia, brain tumours, Ewing’s Sarcoma and Osteosarcoma. Because these are more common in children and teens, an adult, who contracts one of these cancers may be better off working with a paediatric oncologist.

Haematologist-oncologist

This type of oncologist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers like Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.

Taking On Oncology Jobs

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it can be difficult for them to come to terms with. Oncologists, therefore, play a vital role in the treatment of cancer as it is not only their duty to treat the disease but also to explain everything in detail to the patient and oversee the care given to them.

As with many medical professions, an oncologist role can be mentally challenging particularly in the case of a cancer diagnosis. Before taking on any oncologist job, a candidate should bear in mind that patients will respond differently to a diagnosis and staff must be empathetic and understanding but very clear and to the point to accommodate this.
